Medieval ivories are some of my favourites. These walrus ivory chessmen were found in the Outer Hebrides and were created sometime in the 12th century. Despite the challenging material to carve, it's easy to see the humanity in their faces. I particularly like the queen's look of exasperation as she rests her hand on her cheek.
Art: Lewis Chessmen. 1150-1200. Walrus Ivory. British Museum, London.
Color notes: Cream and barely-there buff-colored yarn with golden yellow specks
100% SW merino.
Hand wash cold, lay flat to dry.
